BEHIND THE LOGO

There is much at risk when we talk freely about mental illness. We live in an age with consequences, discrimination, and stigma. It is not always easy to speak up about mental illness.

Sometimes I have found myself curious if another person experiences the challenges of mental health. If you think that it might be safe to talk about mental illness you could draw a circle and make sure the other person is aware of the circle being drawn.

If the other person is open to trust on the subject of speaking on mental illness, that person will draw the line of a bird through the middle of the circle.

The circle represents the meeting together of the people. A carved line of a bird can be used as a talking stick if you so choose. Remember this is a grassroots movement that will grow and change as need be to serve the people by the people.

The bird represents freedom—how you look at it and live it. It could be two individuals out of the circle coming together in the middle of the circle in safety and trust and sharing and caring on the subject of mental health.

The circle to me, (Arlen) represents the Patient Lounges through my twenties when I was trapped in a vicious cycle of psychiatric hospitalizations. The highlight of these hospitalizations were the circles where we met—people of all ages, cultures, and interests; yet we all shared mental illness as a common foe. We shared and cried and laughed and listened to music and made each other feel better. We learned to become a supportive family and then we were released into the world where silence on the subject was preferred by many.

That is what wehavenames2 is all about. It is by our people, for our people. May we meet in a circle and share and cry and laugh and sing and learn to dance again. May we find the courage to be transparent and to love and accept each other the way we are. It is then that we can move on to better mental health.

It is time to break the silence and shame of mental illness on a whole new level in small and large groups. Come join us in meeting together for better mental health.
